Some things get better precisely because they never needed to change.

New Here? Start With This

Colorado has more breweries per capita than almost anywhere in the country, and Denver's housing stock is just as varied. This is Denver Craft Beer Meets Denver Homes, a monthly series that pairs a beer style with the Denver home style that shares its personality. It's not a serious methodology. It's a fun way to look at Denver's neighborhoods, and a reminder that whatever you're drinking, the house still needs a good inspection.

If you searched Oktoberfest Denver, Denver lager, or classic Denver home styles, this one's for you. Colonial Revival, Ranch, and Denver Square inventory makes up a big share of what's actually for sale in the metro, so it's worth knowing what you're looking at before you tour.

About the author: Brian Trampler is a Denver REALTOR® and Broker Associate with Corcoran Perry & Co., holding the Pricing Strategy Advisor (PSA) designation. Lager drinkers value process and patience over flash. This week's four styles pair with Denver homes built on the same principle.

Beer Style: Pilsner | Home Style: Colonial Revival

Pilsner is precise. Clean, balanced, no rough edges. Colonial Revival homes, popular in Denver from the 1920s through the 1950s, work from the same instinct. Symmetrical facades, evenly spaced windows, a front door centered like it means it.

These houses have formal rooms with clear purposes: living room, dining room, kitchen, each doing its job. If you like a beer that doesn't need embellishment to be good, a Colonial probably suits you.

Worth knowing: Original crown molding and hardwood floors are common in Denver's Colonial Revivals, often installed with techniques that are harder to find today.

Beer Style: Oktoberfest / Märzen | Home Style: Mountain Chalet

Märzen is a beer built for gathering, brewed months ahead and lagered until it's ready. Mountain chalet style homes, with steep rooflines and heavy timber, carry that same sense of occasion. These show up around Denver in pockets influenced by Colorado's alpine architecture.

Big common rooms, stone fireplaces, wood everywhere. These are houses built for people who plan ahead and like having somewhere for everyone to land.

Worth knowing: A lot of these homes were built with oversized mudrooms, useful in a state where half the year involves snow gear.

Beer Style: Light Lager | Home Style: Ranch

Light lager doesn't overthink things, and neither does a Ranch home. Single story, open layout, attached garage. Popular in Denver from the 1950s through the 1970s, these homes were built for accessible, low-maintenance living.

Horizontal lines, easy connection to the backyard, nothing that demands constant upkeep. If your beer preference is give me something reliable, a Ranch is probably your house.

Worth knowing: Ranch homes were originally a California idea that adapted well to Denver's suburban growth after World War II, and they remain some of the most in-demand starter homes in the metro.

Beer Style: Traditional Lager | Home Style: Denver Square

Traditional lager doesn't need a gimmick to be good. Denver Square homes, built mostly between 1895 and 1930, work the same way. Boxy two-story design, solid construction, room layouts that have held up for over a century.

These homes were often sold through mail order catalogs as complete kits, which tells you something about how standardized and dependable the design was meant to be.

Worth knowing: A lot of Denver Squares kept their original front porches through decades of remodels, because the layout just works.

Brian's Non-Alcoholic Pick This Month

Sober curious? Here's the non-alcoholic brew that fits this month's theme: I love a good Marzen at this time of year, and Best Day Brewing has their "Oktoberfest" Marzen-style lager. I have this one and a couple of other good fall beers in my fridge right now; Athletic Dark & Gourdy and Shipyard PumpkinHead NA!
